Banker's Burden
Like the rest of you, I received the Chairman's request to provide suggestions on how to relieve the burden on regulated financial institutions. I was very sorry to get such a request. I believe that, in order for us to continue to enjoy the respect of the American people and Congress, we need to remain independent of the financial institutions we regulate. Furthermore, we need to ensure that the deposit insurance laws and other tasks set forth for the FDIC by Congress are rigorously enforced. If you took a poll of the American people, I doubt if you would find one in a thousand that think banks are over-regulated. Because of the banking crisis and because of some high profile bank frauds perpetrated in recent years, most people I talk to think there should be more regulations and more rigorous enforcement of banking laws --- not less..
